Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events: review

Hey y’all! Today I’m doing a review for Netflix’s fabulous A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Beware: this review contains spoilers for the books and show.

I haven’t actually read the books in around 2 years, so I honestly don’t know if the show is 100% accurate. However I could just about tell that it mostly kept to the plot, sometimes even quoting my favourite lines from the book word from word. In some areas the plot was spiced up a bit, but I think Snicket, who wrote most of the screenplay, was just snatching his chance and adding in things he didn’t think of when first publishing the books. The changes were mainly small ones, and were VERY MISLEADING at times.

One new character was Jacquelyn or whatever her face is, the badass lady who’s helping the Baudelaires. Maybe they’ve turned Jaques into a woman?ย I don’t really know but she seems pretty cool. I did like how some of the VFD characters were introduced earlier on, so we can follow some of their story as well, as the show goes on.

I’m sorry but I have to talk about the parents. (LOOK AWAY NOW IF YOU DO NOT WISH FOR SPOILERS.) I was so totally fooled. At first I was angry that they had completely changed the entire plot and made the Baudelaire parents actually alive. Then I veryย slightly accidentally read an online spoiler before I finished the season that the parents were actually the Quagmire parents and I was A-FLABBERGASTED. How could they do this to us Lemons? I was completely tricked.

Also so happy about that lil sneak peak of the Quagmires! I love these three so so much, especially Quigley. He’s probably my favourite character of this series ever โค I like the ending when the Baudelaires and the Quagmires are sitting back to back with their spyglasses. And I’m sorry but what was that cringy song at the end?! Bit weird. I did love the opening theme song though. Literally never knew Neil Patrick Harris could sing.

Speaking of Neil, I think the characters were cast really well. Normally child actors are awful, but these weren’t too bad. The actress who portrayed Violet did pretty well for, like, a 12-year-old. And she looks so much like Violet from the film! Also Sunny was fab.

Overall, I just really enjoyed the whole season. Yes, I binge-watched it. Yes, my family got pretty annoyed that I kept obsessing over it because none of them are Lemons ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I love the whole style of the show, how Snicket narrates, the music, the actors, the sly humour, even the costumes. So so hyped for season 2! Only another WHOLE YEARย to wait!

  1. I saw this series on Netflix too! I’ve never read the books but I think I’m going to check them out. Haha! Yes, the ending song was a bit odd…(BUT OH MY GOODNESS SO CATCHY. It took me forever before I finally got it stuck out of my head ๐Ÿ˜‚). I agree, they did a really good job with the casting. And yes…must wait an entire year for the next season. *face palm*

  2. I stopped at episode 3 because I was honestly kind of bored with it. I read the books years ago when they first came out so it took a little catching up on what was going on and what happened. I remember everything for the most part. I wish it would have been a bit darker like the movie and a less theatrical. I love NPH but wanted him to be a bit more serious. It was almost too comical for my liking. Not saying the production on it was bad just meh for me. I don’t know if I will go back to finish it lol

    • The episodes did drag on a bit, but I stayed because I love the book series a lot and I know Netflix shows are pretty good. I thought it was going to be darker as well, but I didn’t really mind that it wasn’t. Although the later books do get darker so maybe the show will later on??

  3. YAS I RELATE SO MUCH TO THIS!! And I actually reread the books right before watching each episode so I can say they are basically WORD FOR WORD for half the time!! I was so amazed!! And omg I agree about the parents. My sister and I were obsessing wonderfully over it and we were so worried/confused…and then they went and PUNCHED US IN THE FEELS LIKE THAT!?!?!? WHYYYYYYY. But also it was so perfect.๐Ÿ˜‚ Basically the best show of my life. I can’t wait for the next season. And the kids are all so cute and quite good at acting so yaaaay!!! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

    • I need to reread the books so badly; the show just made me miss them. AND HOW DARE THEY DO THIS, I was actually so angry. The bit when they’re flying over Lake Lachrymose? I was literally shouting at the screen for them to unite. And now even more pain because the next season comes out in like a year. Like wut and why. But yes I love it so muchh โค
